TRAFFIC queued up Whitehill Lane in Royal Wootton Bassett on this afternoon after a three-vehicle pile-up just off the M4.

At first, drivers reported to police there was a four-vehicle crash between Junction 15 and Junction 16 of the M4, causing tailbacks.

But it later emerged the incident was nearer to Junction 16, on the A3102 Wiltshire to A3102, in Royal Wootton Bassett.

The roads were partially blocked in both directions near Swindon West because of the collision.

Some drivers reported taking more than an hour to travel journeys usually taking 15 minutes.

Later, Wiltshire Police confirmed three vehicles had been involved in a collision outside Spittleborough Farm in the town.

Two cars and a truck were involved in the incident, although no-one was injured.

Police were called to attend the scene shortly after 2pm, and the incident was cleared by shortly after 3pm.

Traffic started easing soon after that, just in time for the usual Friday evening rush.

A police spokesman said at 3.15pm: "There was a three-vehicle road traffic collision called in to us at 2.17pm outside Spittleborough Farm in Royal Wootton Bassett. Believed to be two cars and one truck involved.

"Nobody is believed to be injured. The incident has now been cleared so traffic should be easing now."
