Company director Martyn Ward, who has spent 20 years helping others raise money for charity, is now to take on his own challenge.

Mr Ward, 49, who runs events firms Quest and Questars at Coulston, near Devizes, will be canoeing from Devizes to Westminster, running a marathon around London and cycling back to Devizes in 60 hours starting on May 21.

He said: "Over the last 20 years Quest has worked alongside many of our clients helping them to raise fantastic sums of money for many different charities such as the NSPCC, Macmillan Nurses, RNIB, Age UK, Help for Heroes, British Red Cross and many more.

"We therefore thought, the best way to celebrate our 20 year trading anniversary was to create and complete our own charity challenge."

Mr Ward, from Eddington, will be competing all three stages but he will be joined on the cycle ride by his brother and fellow company director Richard, 52, and Richard's son Gregory, 21. On the kayak stage Daniel Carrivick, 34, who is Questars' course director, will join him in the boat.

His first challenge will be to kayak the 125 miles from Devizes to Westminster but instead of using K2 kayaks used in the famous Devizes to Westminster race the pair will be paddling much heavier and wider boats that will make the journey even more difficult.

He said: "The consequence of the additional weight and width is that it generates at least three times the drag of a K2.

"There are 77 portages weirs between Devizes and Westminster which will require the kayak being carried around the various locks and weirs."

On the third day of the challenge he will run 26.2 miles from Parliament Square to Tower Bridge taking in four royal parks and part of the Grand Union Canal.

Mr Ward said: "As we near the end of the course, we will pass along the streets of the City of London, home to a number of our corporate clients and from where we have delivered many events over the past 20 years."

Finally Mr Ward will cycle 108 miles from Tower Bridge back to his office near Devizes.

It is hoped that between £2,000 and £3,000 will be raised for charity and split between the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research Uk and Children In Need.

Mr Ward said: "My father, who was an energetic man and who appeared to be fit, very sadly died prematurely of a heart attack.

"Quest’s adventure race series Questars and several of our corporate events are physical challenges which promote exercise and encourage the participants to get or remain fit which may help prevent them from suffering from heart disease."

He is training by paddling on the Kennet and Avon Canal, running around 22 miles a week and doing spinning classes and road sessions on his bike.
