THE Royal British Legion is looking for veterans of VE Day to take part in national celebrations to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

A series of national events will take place in London from May 8 to 10 along with community events and celebrations across the country.

As part of this the Legion is calling out to veterans of VE Day, who are over 85 and

played an active role during the Second World War, to apply to be part of the celebrations.

Vice admiral Peter Wilkinson, national president of The Royal British Legion, said:

“The commemoration of this conflict, still in living memory, gives us the opportunity to salute the Second World War generation.

“We hope that all communities will use the VE Day 70 commemorations to thank them and celebrate the role they played in our nation’s history.”

Places are available for a series of events over the weekend including a service of remembrance at the Cenotaph on May 8.

There will also be a service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey on March 10, followed by a march from the Abbey to Horse Guards Parade and into St James’s Park, where the Legion will host a lunch reception.

All veterans can be accompanied by a nominated carer and travel costs will be covered.
