The Salvation Army in Chippenham became Santa’s workshop as volunteers began to sort through tables of donated toys.

Generous readers have until December 16 to donate toys to their nearest drop-off point but with so many coming in, sorting began last Friday afternoon to ensure toys reach their new homes in time for Christmas.

Volunteers gave up their afternoon to pack more than 60 black sacks with toys for families who would otherwise struggle to give their children toys at Christmas.

Volunteer Alan Dixon said: “I’m supporting the work we do as I have seen the importance of what we are doing.

“The work is ongoing through the year but Christmas has its own emotional pull on people.”

Sorting started ahead of Tuesday’s deadline with the Salvation Army expecting to load up a similar number of sacks again between now and Christmas.

Another volunteer giving up her time was Ruth Womack, who said: “I’ve helped by mucking in with everyone; it’s the second year I have done it. It’s always nice and friendly down here. It’s nice to give something back.”

Once complete, the bags will be taken to families, young people living on their own who have little or no family to support them and those going through a short-term family crisis or a family health issue.

Myrtle Harris, another volunteer, said: “We always help out each Christmas to pack up the toys and we enjoy it, people have been generous. It’s a busy time.”

Salvation Army organiser Margaret Boyd said she was very pleased with how the afternoon went and stressed the importance of people remaining financially safe during the hectic festive season.

She said: “Christmas is a time when people can experience the joy of giving but it becomes important not to spend beyond your means.

“A small gift given with love is more than enough.”
