A couple from Calne had to go to hospital twice in one day after one unfortunate accident followed another.

First they were involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes van on the A4 between Derry Hill and Pewsham Way, at 10.35am last Thursday.

The man driving was trapped inside his Mazda estate and had to be released by two fire crews.

He was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon by ambulance with a neck injury. His 64-year-old wife had a minor seatbelt injury and was treated at the scene, and their car was recovered to D&C Fry’s Garage in Kington Langley.

Later in the day, at 5.15pm, their friend picked them up from hospital in her Skoda Fabia. But before they got home, they went to pick up shopping from the mangled Mazda.

While in the compound the 68-year-old driver lost control of her automatic car and accidentally pinned the 64-year-old woman against her car, where jagged metal shards were protruding.

South West Ambulance Service said she suffered a nasty cut to her lower leg and was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.

Police referred the incident to the Health and Safety Executive and are not taking any action against any party.

HSE said they were not treating the incident as a work-related activity.
