The officer leading the search for Sian O'Callaghan has said that he is content that an assault on a woman in Elmina Road, Swindon, on Tuesday is not linked to the 22-year-old’s disappearance.

The Elmina Road incident took place at 10am when a 20-year-old was assaulted by a man, who was believed to have been driving a red vehicle.

Detective Superinten-dent Steve Fulcher said: “Inquiries have been undertaken and I am content that it (the assault) is not linked to the disappearance of Sian.”

Police said there had been some confusion on social networking sites and they wanted to make the situation clear for members of the public.

Police say they will use social networking sites as well as the media and the force website if they need further help in the search.

Chief Inspector Bob Edge said: “The public support has been fantastic and when required we will put any additional appeals for help on the force website and via the media and social networks.

“The use of social media can be a very positive outlet for information and we will continue to use it to provide public information and facts that aide this inquiry.”
