A new CCTV system has been installed in Cricklade in an attempt to control bad behaviour in the town.
Four cameras were installed at strategic positions across the town to make it clear to any trouble makers that they are being filmed.
Bob Jones, chairman of the Cricklade Business Association, said: “The idea has been floating around for three years.
“It takes a long while to find finance and get planning permission.
“It went to public consultation and people wanted it.”
The process had also been slowed down becaue one camera was erected on a listed building and had to be specially adapted.
The initiative is a joint enterprise between the town council and Cricklade Business Association and covers areas which have been affected by vandalism.
Mr Jones said: “It is a deterrent and we want the people of Cricklade to know that it is there.
“The cameras are monitored and we can access them 24 hours a day.
“It is a way to reduce crime and we are working jointly with the police.”
Mr Jones said the cameras had already captured film helpful to police.
He believes it is very good news that something to aid community safety has finally arrived in Cricklade.
Mr Jones said the CCTV cameras cost about £28,000 and were funded by Cricklade Town Council and the former North Wiltshire District Council.
It is hoped the cameras will act mainly as a deterrent to those fixed on causing trouble.
Town clerk Shelley Parker said: “The cameras are mainly there for anti-social behaviour and minor vandalism, including graffiti.”
