Some of Britain's worst speeders are in Wiltshire says report

Some of the worst speeding motorists are to be found in Scotland, Swindon and Sheffield, it was revealed today.

More than 54 per cent of male drivers aged 17 to 21 in Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, have a speeding conviction, research by moneysupermarket.com found.

More than 52 per cent of men aged 31 to 40 in Swindon, Wiltshire, and more than 30 per cent in Sheffield have been convicted for speeding.

Other areas where there are high speeding rates for particular male age groups include Crieff in Perth, Scotland; the Holmes Chapel area of Crewe in Cheshire; the city centre and Ancoats area of Manchester; and Bishopton, Paisley, Scotland.

Most of the high rates of speeding involve males aged 17 to 40, but in Henley-in-Arden in the West Midlands 22.34 per cent of males aged 51 and over have had speeding convictions, while 21.58 per cent aged 41-50 in Kensington and Chelsea in west London had been "done" for speeding.

The research also showed that drivers with speeding convictions risk big rises in car insurance premiums. On average, drivers with nine points on their licence from three speeding offences would see their premium increasing from £546 to £858.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Unfortunately the classic stereotype of a boy racer lives on. It is telling there are no female drivers anywhere near the top of the table in our analysis of speeding convictions, and unfortunately this is reflected in the price of premiums for men when compared to women.

"Speeding does increase accident rates so it's hardly surprising insurers view a conviction dimly.

"The cost of car insurance can be high enough for young men, but added to that, speeding convictions can mean points on your licence and can potentially double your insurance premium, as well as landing you with a fine of up to £1,000."

It wouldn't have anything to do with the number of speed cameras Swindon had until recently and your chances of being caught?

I find it difficult to believe that there is a speeding problem in Wiltshire. I travel from Devizes, through Wesbury to Warminster every day and there are plenty of tractors, cement lorries, milk floats, coaches, road works, school buses and lorries on the 361 and 350 to prevent me from speeding. Speeding is wrong but congestion is not good for anybody either.
