LIGHTNING struck a boxing gym where Commonwealth Games gold medal holder Jamie Cox was training.

The strike, which also hit surrounding buildings, occurred at 3.08pm yesterday, downing phone lines, setting off alarms and short-circuiting computers and other machinery.

John Loyle, owner of the Garage Door Centre in Maxwell Street, said he heard a "tremendous bang" as he sat at his desk. He said: "It was nearly deafening. It lit up the room and put out my computer systems and my CCTV."

The Boxing Academy, where Jamie Cox was training, was also hit but only suffered slight damage.
