A YOUNG man died when the sports car he was travelling in crashed into a tree.
A heap of smashed metal and glass was all that remained of the car after the driver and passenger were cut free.
A man in his late 20s from the Wroughton area, who was in the front passenger seat of the silver Audi TT sports car when it crashed on Brimble Hill, died before emergency services reached the scene.
Sgt Richard Day, from Wiltshire Police's Northern Roads Policing Unit, said: "There were two people in the vehicle and the passenger died at the scene.
"The passenger took the full force of the impact when the car hit the tree. The driver received injuries which are not thought to be life threatening.
"He was removed from the vehicle with the assistance of the fire brigade and taken to the Great Western Hospital.
"The car was travelling from Wroughton to Chiseldon, when it came round the bend and lost control, then collided with a tree.
"As far as we are aware, no other vehicle was involved."
The driver, who comes from the Oxford area, is thought to have lost control of the car as it rounded the right hand bend on the brow of the hill, leaving Wroughton in the Chiseldon direction.
"Roadside tests were conducted on the driver and he was not found to be intoxicated," said Sgt Day.
Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone who was driving on Brimble Hill at about 4pm, or who saw the collision or the silver Audi before the crash, to contact the Northern Roads Policing Unit on 0845 408 7000.
