A French magistrate is visiting Swindon in an attempt to find out more about a convicted murderer who lived in the town during the 1990s.
Ulrich Munstermann, now 49, is serving life in Germany for raping and killing a 25-year-old woman.
He is now a suspect in a murder which took place in France in 1989.
Examining magistrate, Charles Prats, said: "We need to hear from people who knew Munstermann, who worked with him or who have any information about him."
Mr Prats is investigating the rape and murder of 24-year-old student Sylvie Baton in Avalon, Burgundy.
Munstermann came to Britain in 1986 after completing a jail sentence in Germany for two sex crimes.
He worked in Swindon as a television repair-man.
Det Ch Insp Kier Pritchard of Wiltshire Police said: "We've released a photo of him at the time to jog people's memories.
"He was using a blue VW camper-style vehicle which he replaced with a blue 4x4 Mercedes.
"We are asking witnesses to come forward to support our French colleagues."
