A TEAM from the organisation that grades healthcare providers for safety and levels of care is expected to arrive at GWH on March 21.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission last delivered a full report on the hospital and its services in September 2015.

They determined that the hospital required improvement in six out of eight areas.

Only maternity and gynaecology and end of life care were rated as good.

The emergency department was a particular cause for concern and a warning notice was imposed in December to drive forward improvements.

A further visit in April last year highlighted a number of areas that still hadn’t been addressed, so it is likely to be the subject of detailed inspections during the visit next month.

But despite the ongoing challenges, medical director Guy Rooney believes that a lot of good work has been put in since the last full inspection.

“Following our last CQC visit we set up an improvement committee and we had an action plan looking at every point that was made,” he said.

“It does feel like a different place now. Despite a huge influx of patients I see staff who feel much more in control - everyone has a good story to tell and it’s about people recognising the contribution they’re making, not being shy about saying what they are proud of.

“We’re not perfect, but hopefully the CQC will see some of the good things that are happening here.”
