Lord Stoddart of Swindon has criticised the "uninspiring" Olympic logo.
The independent peer was speaking in the House of Lords and asked why it had cost £400,000 to produce.
Culture spokesman Lord Davies of Oldham replied: "It may be uninspiring to some and inspiring to others.
"What is clear about the brand is that it is meant to be a multi-media attraction. You may only have seen it within the framework of a newspaper - a rather dated and static concept of the development of the logo.
"As for cost, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games was concerned that numbers of organisations should submit bids.
"This was the best one and this was the result."
The logo was unveiled last week to a chorus of public disapproval.
