THREE fire crews were called out to fight a blaze involving a huge wood pile last night.
A Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service spokeswoman said there had been a controlled burn on the site at Vastern Wharf, near Royal Wootton Bassett, but it had spread unexpectedly and set light to a stack of bagged up wood offcuts.
Crews from Royal Wootton Bassett, Westlea and Swindon were called just after 8.20pm, along with a water carrier from Ramsbury.
A fire break was created with the help of a farmer and two jets were used to bring the fire under control.
Relief crews from Stratton and Calne were used to keep a single hose on the stack through the night.
It was eventually damped down by 8.45am today.
