WOULD-BE university student Ben Cockrem spent A-level results day worrying that his dream career could be in jeopardy after a glitch stopped Swindon College sending them to UCAS.

The 18-year-old had a provisional offer of a place at Brunel University to study engineering and hopes to use the degree to join the RAF.

But when he logged on to the university website this morning he was greeted with the message: “We are still awaiting the results from Swindon College.”

Then just after 5pm, following a day-long wait, the results he needed were finally uploaded.

A spokeswoman for the college confirmed to the Advertiser they were with UCAS and the university had also been contacted.

Attempts were also being made to contact Ben, who is currently in Malaysia which is seven hours ahead of the UK, to let him know the good news.

Earlier his father Jason, from Devizes, said they were worried that Brunel could release his place today if it hadn’t received his results or acceptance.

Ben, from Devizes, who was expected to pass his level 3 Btec with distinctions, had emailed the university appealing to them to be patient, but was extremely concerned. “We are in the lap of the Gods,” said Jason during day. “He is gutted to be honest.”

He said: “The problem that we seem to have is that the course tutor is on holiday.”

“It’s a very worrying time. I don’t know if it’s because they don’t have enough staff or they are dealing with more complaints,” he said. “He has been talking to a couple of friends on the same course and it seems like there are other students in the same situation.”
