WROUGHTON carnival returns this weekend with thousands expected to line the streets as dozens of floats dazzle past.

Superheroes, Minions and the Second World War are just some of the themes chosen this year by those who have spent months creating their floats ahead of the event on Saturday, hoping to impress spectators.

And green-fingered members of Wroughton & District Gardeners’ Society will be pushing wheelbarrows full of floral creations to create a sea of colour.

Hundreds of schoolchildren will also be joining in, including from Wroughton Infant School, as they climb aboard the floats as the procession makes its way from the Fox & Hounds at 1pm and finishes in Weir Field at 2pm.

There will be road closures in place as it heads down High Street, Wharf Road and Perry’s Lane towards Weir Field and police officers will be diverting traffic.

Afterwards a fun fair, stalls, food and drinks will beckon people to continue celebrating the community event, and a main stage in Weir Field will also host a plethora of entertainment from the likes of Swindon 105.5 and singers and dancers.

The judging of the floats will take place at 12 midday and there will be a dog show from 2.30pm to 4pm with categories such a waggiest tail and golden oldie. Gourmet burgers, pizzas and snacks will be on sale.

Jo Porcic, 43, of Inverary Road, is among eight committee members made up of residents who decided to take on the reigns of the event after it was cancelled in 2014.

The vice chairman said: “What I’m looking forward to is seeing the community supporting a community event and future proofing it for generations to come.

“We are expecting, looking at previous years, in the region of 5,000 people.”

Alcohol, has however, been banned after previous problems caused by boozy antics. The committee want to concentrate on the event being harmonious and fun for families.

Jo added: “We will not be selling alcohol in the field as we want to discourage bad behaviour.

"The pubs will be putting up music after 6pm, and be having barbecues, where people can disperse to.”
