Bike smash policeman critical but stable

The police constable who lost a leg in a motorbike accident yesterday afternoon has been named as father of two Martin Miles.

The 48-year-old, who is married with youngsters under school age, lives in Swindon but is still in a critical but stable condition at the Great Western Hospital.

PC Miles has served with Wiltshire Police for more than 29 years, almost exclusively in Swindon and the surrounding area.

For the last eight years, he has worked as the community beat officer at Highworth, where he is extremely well known and popular within community.

This afternoon he will be undergoing further operations to his broken arm, which he sustained during the accident with a Nissan 4 X 4 on the B4019 near Blunsdon.
