VILLAGERS in Honeystreet have six weeks to decide if they want to put in a bid for their village pub, after the owners of The Barge Inn said they intend to put it on the open market.

Community interest groups now have until March 5 to express any interest in buying The Barge Inn, after which it could go on general sale if no application from the parish council or other public body is made.

If a community group decides to put in a bid, it will then have six months to make its proposal, although there is no obligation on the owner to accept the offer. Wiltshire Council have confirmed the nearby barn and campsite on adjoining land are not included in the proposal.

Simon Day, performance and service development manager for Wiltshire Council, said: “The full moratorium of six months, if triggered, is intended to allow Community Interest Groups time to raise funding to put together a credible bid to buy the asset.” Should a group come forward the owner has no obligation to accept the offer.
