PEWSEY will not have a single bank to serve its community after Lloyds Bank announced on Wednesday that both towns’ branches are among 100 to close between July and October.

Customers without online banking and businesses who use the Pewsey High Street branch will be affected.

Lloyds said the closures were the result of fewer branch transactions. An exact date has not yet been confirmed for each branch closure.

Pewsey Parish Council clerk Alison Kent said: “This is a massive blow to so many people, not just in Pewsey but the surrounding villages too.

“To be in a position like this where we do not have a single bank is pretty bad. This closure is of huge importance. We are fortunate in that we have a post office where you can do some bank transactions but this is far from ideal.

“The staff are great and it has an outstanding reputation in the village. This will hit a lot of people, especially the elderly.”

Last week Lloyds released plans to shrink hundreds of branches in size and also open several new flagship centres. This announcement will mean that the company will be left with 1,950 branches by the end of the year, which is still the largest network of any UK high street bank.

The Lloyds bank branches in Tidworth and Corsham will also close.
