SAVAGE hills, lorry-loads of mud and the bitter cold could not stop 600 runners loving every minute of Milton Lilbourne’s annual Rough And Tumble Run on Sunday.

The hugely popular 10-mile run, just as well known for the demanding course as the endless supplies of home-made cakes villagers bring, featured youngsters in their teenage years to their 70's.

The event, now in its 12th year, got underway at the village hall and recreation ground at 11am in what proved to be another hugely successful run.

"It really could not have gone much better. The conditions were pretty much perfect, the atmosphere was fantastic and one again the helpers were magnificent," said organiser Steve Goulding.

"It gives me such joy to see people battling through the mud and steep climbs and conquer it all with a smile on their face.

"There were some really impressive times from people across all age groups. I sometimes think, I wish someone would be the organiser one time so I can take part as it is such a great event and one of the biggest the village puts on all year."

As is tradition, villagers brought hundreds of home made cakes for people to enjoy, with the proceeds going to the village hall.

"They really outdid themselves yet again. We like to say around here that some people come for the glory, most come for the cakes as they are legendary," he added.

"The marshals were great too, cheering people on and giving people support. It was also good to see a few people go on a run and burn off that Christmas weight that may still have been lingering.

"Ben Cole, who won the race, was phenomenal. To break the record that has stood for seven years by 30 seconds was an incredible achievement. Hopefully he and many others will be back again next year."
