TO COMMEMORATE three people from Pewsey, the Parish Council has opened a new play area as well as planting a number of trees.

The ceremony at Broomcroft Road play area, was organised by the parish council which decided to plant three trees, two to celebrate the lives of Peter Drinnan and Bob Woodward, and a third to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

With help from MP Claire Perry, the council also marked the opening of a new section of the play area, called Colin’s Corner, dedicated to Colin Lampard, who was Parish Council chairman from 1974-2003.

Alison Kent, clerk to Pewsey Parish Council, said: “We are going to refurbish a further two play areas to link in with the Queen’s 90th birthday rather than planting a tree every time. The other two trees were dedicated to Peter Drinnan who died in September, he would also have been 90 in May. Peter was president of the carnival committee and was on the parish council for 28 years.

“The other gentleman, Bob Woodward, died last March and had been parish council chairman for three years. Both Esme Drinnan and Sylvia Woodward were there to help plant the trees.”

The event last Wednesday drew a crowd of over 50 people, including the families of the late councillors, who braved the weather to see their local MP and councillors open the play area.

“Two of the local people, Phil and Liz Stevens, both members of the parish council, have recently become ambassadors for Julia’s House. When we do the next play area we are making it the first to be fully accessible for disabled children, with links to Julia’s House,” added Mrs Kent.

The money for the new play area came from developer contributions, made after more houses were built locally.

“Redcliffe, the housing developers, contributed to the opening of the play area, as did Kennet District Council, which is now of course Wiltshire Council,” said Mrs Kent.
