BAKERS, businesses and residents in Marlborough and Pewsey have been dusting off their aprons to roll out cakes and get their kettles boiling in support of Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.

The charity’s national fundraising event on Friday saw people gather and take a break from working to tuck into sweet treats, have a hot drink and organise raffles all for a good cause.

Staff at St John’s Academy and clothes shop East in Marlborough hosted their own coffee mornings with a variety of cupcakes and muffins on offer, while St Peter’s Church in the town also invited members of the public to join in.

Sixth form students Libby Buxton, Amber Challen and Matty Wright from St John’s arranged a coffee morning at Wilton Windmill and organised games and activities on Sunday.

Also in Marlborough, Lilian Leadbetter, 59, invited people to her coffee morning at Pino’s Restaurant, which also included a glass of Prosecco and cakes made by Nish Ellis and Pino’s wife Anna.

It is the second Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning Miss Leadbetter, of The Green, Marlborough, has hosted and donations and money from the raffle has raised around £1,000 during the two hour event.

This year was even more poignant for Miss Leadbetter. She said: “In July my dearest old school friend Jane Elizabeth Saint died aged 58 from lung cancer and another great school friend Ruth McKiernan is in a hospice in Lancashire.

“It is a great and worthwhile cause in memory of dearest friends and relatives that have passed.”

In Pewsey, The Shed Alehouse had their own coffee morning with lots of homemade cakes and a raffle which included a variety of prizes and raised just over £330.

Staff at Pet Rebellion in Manningford Bohune also invited fellow businesses at Manningford Estate to join in and tuck into some walnut, carrot and coffee cakes as well as muffins and raised £400.

Managing director Ray Foard said: “It is one of the things that everyone knows someone suffering from cancer. We are quite new to this estate and it’s a great way to raise some money and get to know our neighbours and we like coffee and too much cake.”
