PEWSEY will soon see its own official village flag flying over the village.

Initially it will be flown from the church, Bouverie Hall, Spar and the Tale of Spice. However, the plan is to get it flying from as many shops and offices as possible in the area.

The flag started its life as a competition organised by Howard Reed of Pewsey Parish Council. He said: “I was reading the paper one day and read a letter from a village that had just created its own flag and I thought that was just the thing for Pewsey. I contacted the Flag Council and they guided me through the process.”

Coun Reed then decided to get the community involved and opened the contest up to the schools for villagers to vote on their favourite design in Sue Faux’s art shop.

The overwhelming winner was a design by Eleanor Taylor who was a Year 9 at Pewsey Vale School at the time and included an image of one of Wiltshire's iconic white horses. “Her design perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the Pewsey Vale and captured every ones imagination,” Coun Reed added.

“The context of this is that not only did Eleanor do the beautiful design, she wrote the reason for each element on the side of the design itself.

"So every element that makes Pewsey so special is included in her design - the white horse, the rolling green hills and the oak trees signifying the antiquity of the village and of course the crown representing King Alfred.”

The flag was officially unveiled earlier this month at the Tale of Spice and a small drinks party was held as a means of thanking all those who had helped with the flag project.
