A launch day for youth services in Pewsey is being held on February 14 and at the centre of activites will be an ice skating rink.

At the Pewsey Area Board meeting on Monday community youth officer Karen Brown got support for the community activity to promote the Local Youth Network.

The area board approved the funds of just over £1,000 as part of the allocated money for positive activities for young people in the area. Pewsey Parish Council has also donated £100 towards the event.

Ms Brown said: “We want to use this as an opportunity to engage with the young people who attend and find out from them what future activities they would want to see.”

The event will be held outside the Co-op starting in the early afternoon on February 14 and the LYN is also looking to set up other activities on the day.

The 10m by 10m temporary rink will accommodate 24 skaters and will be free to young people although there will be a small charge for adults and young children.

Jerry Kunkler, Wiltshire Councillor for Pewsey, said: “It will be a good thing for the village’s young people and as an area board we are happy to support it.”

It is advised that that people book a session to avoid disappointment. Teenagers get one free session and for all other ages a session costs £3.

Tickets are available in advance from Pewsey Library on February 12 between 4pm and 5pm.

After Pewsey’s well-used youth club The Shak closed at the end of September, as a result of cuts to Wiltshire Council youth services, the Pewsey LYN was set up to arrange activities across the community.

Ms Brown was appointed as in the autumn and has been supporting LYN and coordinating the activities across the Vale.

A monthly youth club SN9 is now being held at the fire station, for 11-18 year olds, and Woodborough Social Club has also donated the use of its main hall for youth activities such as dance classes or table tennis.
