BURBAGE celebrated its 20th Christmas tree sale this weekend with a record number of visitors.

Thousands of people flocked to the village and more than 750 trees were sold – about 60 more than last year.

Families took advantage of the variety of trees on offer, from spruce to non-drop and potted varieties.

Organiser Emma Butler said: “It was fantastic. We were really lucky with the weather and had record-breaking sales.

“We were aiming to raise £20,000 for All Saints' Church – it’s the 20th year so we thought 20 for 20 – but we’ve smashed that target.

“All the stallholders did really well and they’ve all said they’ll be coming back next year.”

As well as two marquees with more than 35 market stalls there was live music from Pewsey Belles Choir and refreshments including hotdogs, mulled wine and roasted chestnuts.

Mrs Butler said: “All the children were running around with their faces painted like Rudolph. There was a great family atmosphere.

“There was a bit of a frost which gave it a real Christmas feel.”

More than 50 volunteers helped to make sure the event went smoothly.

Mrs Butler said: “We’re so lucky with the support we get from the community.”

The event started 20 years ago to raise funds to repair the church roof. Savernake Forest stopped selling trees and gave its remaining plantation to the village.

To coincide with the sale there was a celebration of life on Saturday afternoon at All Saints' Church.

Marlborough Big Band and Burbage School Choir performed while the Christmas tree was lit in remembrance of those who have died. Money raised will go to Prospect Hospice Savernake Appeal.
