Thousands of spectators were dazzled by bright lights, music and high spirits during Pewsey Carnival’s famous illuminated procession on Saturday.

The crowds cheered loudly and got into the full spirit of carnival as the floats, including Alice in Wonderland, George and the dragon and Ragdoll Pewsey, made their way through the village.

Carnival chairman Bernie Bradshaw said: “Once again Pewsey has done us proud. After almost 40 years in the village, it never ceases to amaze me how people pull out all the stops to put on such a fantastic show.

“So much hard work is done by so many people to achieve this magical extravaganza – which is wondrous even to those who’ve lived in Pewsey all their lives, let alone someone seeing it for the first time.”

More than 50 floats and walking entries made their way along the procession route, which started at Carnival Field and included the High Street and North Street.

Penguins, jellyfish and Noddy spent nearly two hours parading around the vilage to the delight of onlookers.

Spectator Richard Costello said: “We come every year over from Salisbury and it never disappoints. The kids love it obviously but it’s enjoyable for us adults too.

“It just seems to take over the whole village and that’s great, to have such a community feel is wonderful. There is such a buzz.”

Spectator Amanda Wheeler, from Burbage, added: “The atmosphere was fantastic. It was a really great carnival - the best in years.

“There were more floats than usual, the quality was better than ever and the bands were brilliant as always.”

The night remained peaceful with no arrests and just two people being asked to leave the area.

Carnival fortnight came to an end the following day with the closing ceremony in the Market Place.

Carnival queen Eleanor Smith said: “It’s good to be a part of it because usually I’m just watching.”

There are still a few carnival events are scheduled throughout the rest of the year including the camel racing and curry night, apple pressing day and the carnival gala concert.
