QUAKER Guy Loosmore set out plans for the town council to engage more with young people when he
became the mayor of Marlborough at a ceremony on Monday night.
Coun Loosmore became the town’s 703rd recorded mayor – and it is believed he will be the first to get married during his time in office when he weds his fiancée Fiona Lawson.
All but one of his council colleagues voted for Coun Loosmore, with one councillor abstaining, and Coun Marion Hannaford-Dobson was elected as deputy mayor.
In his address, Coun Loosmore discussed developing a youth council although said this aim may not be completed in his year as mayor.
Coun Loosmore, 59, said that the theme of his mayoral year will be to celebrate the town’s diversity and to build a sense of community.
“The importance of community in my view is greater now than it has ever been,” he said.
“Marlborough is an historic place and we need to celebrate that together with our community to stand out as a vibrant market town that has its own clear identity.”
The Marlborough and District Dyslexia Association and cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow were named as Coun Loosmore’s charities of the year.
He said: “Dyslexia, which I have, is not something that can be cured; you have to learn to manage and live with it. I was lucky with the
support I had growing up.”
