FIRES that destroyed the majority of Marlborough High Street were brought to life for children who visited the Merchant’s House to learn about the history of the town.

Pupils form Phoenix class at Kennet Valley School went on a guided tour of the house, which dates back to the 17th century and got stuck in with guides dressed up in traditional costume.

They also learned about the civil war and discovered more about the great fires in Marlborough which burnt down a large amount of the High Street in 1653.

Jacqueline McQue from Kennet Valley School said: “The very knowledgeable staff gave an informative tour of the house, dressed in costume. We learned so much about the town and the house. Thank you so much to everyone at the Merchant’s House.”
