MARLBOROUGH high street was the centre of a fire alert after bank workers in Barclays smelled smoke coming from the building above them.

A spokesman from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that the call out on Monday was believed to be a false alarm, but crews rushed to the scene to prevent any possible fire from spreading throughout the high street buildings.

Crews from Trowbridge, Pewsey and Swindon were at the scene from around 4pm this afternoon and remained at the scene as thermal cameras were used to explore the floors above the shops.
