The mother of a severely disabled son has thanked green fingered volunteers who carried out back breaking work to make her garden a safe space for Harry.

The 17 year old lives with a global development delay and the uneven surface of the garden had prevented Harry from venturing into the garden alone.

Mum Polly Greenaway has raised £5,000 in just five months to change that forever, as a landscape gardener redesigned the area.

On Saturday, 10 volunteers took over the family's green space to level the ground and ensure Harry could enjoy more freedom.

Praising the comradery of the team despite battling rain throughout the day, Polly said: “I was a bit nervous to start with because it was a gamble whether the volunteers would turn up but they all did and they were so hard working. We even had a team of girls in the kitchen making bacon rolls and cups of teas.

“Harry was outside all day too, sitting with them and cheering them up by singing, even during the rain.

“It was a fantastic atmosphere.”

Landscape gardener Jason Clawfield-Ware of CW Landscaping was so impressed by the volunteers he has revealed the project is now on course to complete work as planned on Friday.

Mr Clawfield-Ware said: “We are chuffed to bits to be involved in the project and we are on track to finish on schedule.

“It was incredible to see how all the volunteers pulled together to achieve what we did on Saturday. There’s still some work to do but the volunteers got some of the really hard heavy lifting done on Saturday and made a huge difference.”

Other companies which supported the DIY SOS style make over included A4 Plant Hire, MJ Church skips, Devizes Building Supplies, and Grass Direct who all provided free or reduced prices in an effort to make Polly and Harry’s vision a reality.
