AN Avebury woman intent on making the village's footpaths, cycle paths, roads and signs safer and more accessible raised nearly £600 from a three-day cyclothon.

Moya Brannan, of Swindon Road, set up her stationary bike at the Red Lion pub in the High Street from Saturday to Monday and rode 297.98 miles to raise funds towards this Avebury Transport Group initiative.

The 48-year-old was joined by locals and tourists along the way who brought the combined total of the cycle up to 400 miles and there was also a cake sale by the Women's Institute and a sponge throw to help boost the donations.

"It was a really good success and we all had a good giggle. I cycle quite a lot so the cycling was not too taxing but talking and cycling was the real challenge," she said.

"I had to explain to people whilst riding that this is to raise funds to spend on enhancing the transport infrastructure in Avebury with the goal of making this world heritage site safe and more accessible for everyone to enjoy.

"I had a lot of support, both from those joining in and those spurring me on to go as far as possible. I want to thank everyone who chipped in to help as it was a great success.

"Everybody knows about Stonehenge but not everybody knows about the hidden gem that is Avebury. If we can make the place as safe and accessible as possible to people then that would be wonderful."
