THE historic World Heritage site at Avebury has been voted among the UK's best loved free visitor attractions.

Avebury Stone Circle came fifth in a National Express poll of the south west's top free attractions and it came 17th nationally.

Along with the Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, which date back more than 5,000 years, the 12th century Ludgershall Castle also made it onto the list, finishing 10th in the south west and 48th nationally.

"It is excellent that the wonderful World Heritage site at Avebury continues to attract visitors and we are delighted that it has got this recognition," said Sarah Simmonds, the partnership manager of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Sites.

"People really enjoy walking amongst the stones as you can experience history at first hand. It is a truly special place and one that so many cherish."

A total of 1,000 people were surveyed in the poll, which National Express hope will inspire people to have fun for free as part of their Get out of London campaign.

National Express Managing Director Chris Hardy said: “It can be expensive keeping kids entertained over half term do so we have pulled together a list showing people how they can make the most of the holidays for free.

"There is no end of incredible sights to soak up in Wiltshire for free but as our poll shows people seem particularly enticed by the county’s historical attractions, with Avebury Stone Circle and Ludgershall Castle both making the top 10."
