PLANS to build a new £5m girls’ boarding house at Marlborough College received overwhelming support from the town council this week, after the revised design won praise.

Representatives from the college attended the town council’s planning meeting on Monday to discuss the detailed plans on Dancy House, which got the seal of approval from councillors.

The proposed three-storey boarding house will also have accommodation for three supervisor staff, parking and landscaping, and will sit in College Fields, on the north side of the A4, parallel with four other boarding houses belonging to the college.

Chairman of the planning committee Coun Mervyn Hall said: “After complaints for their design last year, they have gone away and done an exceptional job with something that looks of real quality and is in keeping with the area, so we very much welcome it.”

The building will open in 2018 and accommodate 70 girls, creating around 25 new jobs.

This will be the college’s 16th boarding house and will bring the total number of students to around 990, which will help to manage the demand for places.
