HOMELESS and elderly people from Marlborough enjoyed a Christmas Day to remember thanks to the work of selfless volunteers who put on a special lunch at the town hall.

St John's school pupil Victoria Ellis, 16, chef Mark Shire and councillor Lisa Farrell and 20 other helpers gave up their own festive celebrations to treated nearly 50 people to a three-course meal, free of charge.

Along with the meal, guests were treated to live music, a raffle, presents and bingo from 11am-3pm in what proved to be a hugely successful day.

"It all ran really smoothly and everyone had a great time. One lady came up to me and said this year was the best one in over 10 years of doing this," said Victoria, who helped organise the event for the second straight year.

"So many people were so appreciative of what we did which was great to hear. It was just so wonderful to see people of different ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate and enjoy each other's company.

"I want to thank everyone who made this possible, including the volunteers and the sponsors who were brilliant.

"There was just a wonderful buzz about the place and I am so happy it went well."

For those who could not make it, a couple of volunteers were on hand to deliver seven Christmas meals to people as well.

The sponsors that helped out include Waitrose and Event Exhibition & Design Ltd, who each donated £700, Andrews Butchers for supplying the meat and Marlborough College and St John's for providing the decorations for the town hall.
