PUPILS from Marlborough's St John's School gave something back to a transport service that serves many of them well by raising nearly £1,500 from a non-school uniform day.

Last month, Year 7 pupils put on a huge cake sale in aid of the Kennet Community Transport charity, adding an extra £400 towards their overall total of £1,486.81.

An incredibly grateful Roland Lockey from the charity, which has been running for 25 years, visited the school this week to collect their cheque.

"This has been an absolutely fantastic effort from the school and we are incredibly grateful for all their magnificent efforts to help us," said Mr Lockey, a driver for the charity.

"To raise that much is such a superb effort and one that we really appreciate. This will really help towards the upkeep of the buses and our running costs."

The charity’s bus transports the elderly, disabled and many others door-to-door and around the town. They make more than 1,000 journeys a year in the minibus which has been converted to allow for wheelchair access.

"We were delighted by how much we raised for a very good cause. They have had their public funding cut so anything that helps to keep this great service going is great," said head of Year 7, Ellie Tin.

"We enjoyed supporting them last year and were happy to help again. Many of the kids who live in further flung places in Wiltshire use this service, so it is nice to help a local charity that helps us too.

"I have to say, the cakes that the kids brought in were very impressive. It just shows you what cakes can do."
