MORE than £3,000 was raised from a Remembrance Day Concert at Marlborough College last Sunday, featuring a military band steeped in history.

The Band of the Grenadier Guards, one of the world's premier military band that has been performing for over 330 years, played at a packed Memorial Hall in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Guests were treated to a variety of numbers, including the national anthem, Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture and the Grenadier Elegy and Regimental March among others.

Artistic director for the college, Philip Dukes, said: "It was a fantastic concert for the college, great for the town and it raised a lot of money for a great cause - so we could not really ask for anymore.

"The audience just lapped it all up. The variety on show was superb, it really was quite the spectacle and one that was very fun and enjoyable for everyone.

"We had our regular concert goers there but we also attracted those who have passion for bands such as these, and there were a few additional people who were interested in the visual side of it all too."

The night also paid tribute to the college's 749 ex-pupils who died in the First World War.

"When the band arrived I showed them around the hall and told them about the history of the place which they really appreciated," added Mr Dukes.

"This places is about to go through a £5.5m refurbishment which will make it fit for purpose for the next 100 years but hopefully they will come back more often than that."
