THE WEATHER failed to dampen the spirits for revellers who attended the second Avebury Day over the weekend.

The event, which took place in Avebury Sports Field, Beckhampton Road, started off at midday on Saturday (September 10) when villagers from Avebury, as well as the committee members, sat down to a lunch before the fete began.

Lynzey Paradise, 34, of the High Street, member of the Avebury Day committee, said: “We had a village lunch from 12pm-12.30pm, a lot of people from the village were invited along. There were about 400 of us sitting down to lunch and entertainment before the rest of the day started.”

For the second Avebury Day in two years, the organisers had arranged for a number of stalls and a dog show to take place during the day.

“At 1.30pm the fete opened with about 60 stalls all dotted around the field, some of them by local charities. A lot of local causes were involved in the fete which was brilliant, we even had pony rides so there was something for everyone. We had about 1,500 people visit over the course of the day, we were very pleased with the turnout considering the poor weather in the morning,” added Mrs Paradise.

Carrying on the event into the evening, a number of bands were invited to come and play including local musicians George Wilding, Onyx Duo and Callum Martin Blues Jam.

“We had live music until 9.30pm-10pm with all of the local artists we booked. We were really happy with the day, it was a success overall. We decided to start running Avebury Day again two years ago but that one was the first in over 20 years, so we are glad it went well. It is too much to do every year so I think we will still be running it every two or three years,” said Mrs Paradise.
