FAMILIES are being invited to Crofton Beam Engines this weekend to take part in the very first Boiler Bears Picnic.

The Boiler Bears Picnic, which will take place on Sunday (August 14) from 11am-2.30pm at the pumping station in Crofton, has been organised for families to come and have a look round the historic site as well as offering entertainment for children.

David Throup, 67, of Ryls Lane in Lockeridge, publicity manager for the Crofton Beam Engines site, said: “This is going to be a very lightweight thing for us, it is an event to give everyone a reason to come and visit the engines and something to amuse the kids as well. The picnic isn’t specifically to raise money for the boiler appeal but money from adult’s entry will go towards the appeal.”

The Boiler Appeal, started in June, aims to raise £275,000 so the boiler can be repaired in order to keep the monthly events continuing at the site.

Peter Turvey, chairman of the Crofton branch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, said: “Crofton gives a look of wonder to children and parents alike as it demonstrates the size and power of these engines. With history back to the industrial revolution this is a very special site. We are urgently raising the funds to complete these works this coming winter so that we can continue steaming next year and many years to come.”

As well as a picnic there will also be storytelling, crafts, a treasure hunt and child friendly tours of the beam engines. If people don’t want to bring a picnic then the Engineman’s Rest Café will be open for business. Entry to the event costs £4.50 for adults and free for children aged 16 and under.
