FIRE crews from Marlborough and Calne were rushed to a field in West Overton to fight a blaze involving 150 tonnes of baled straw.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue received the report at 2pm on Wednesday (August 3) of the straw bales and a further 25 square metres of land caught up in a fire in a field just off the A4 between Marlborough and Beckhampton, opposite the Bell Inn pub.

A spokesperson from DWF, speaking on Thursday (August 4), said: "We came away about 8pm last night – Marlborough was there throughout, Calne came away 4.45ish, and the Pewsey water carrier was replaced by the one from Royal Wootton Bassett at about 5ish.

"Final message just before 8pm was that approximately 150 tonnes of baled straw and 25 sq m of stubble were involved in fire, the stubble was extinguished and an area around the bales had been saturated using two main jets. Approximately 30 tonnes of baled straw was burning out under control, supervised by the farmer."
