A MAN from Aldbourne has shown his creative side once again after transforming an old bike into a new bin for the local BMX track, continuing his mission to stop littering in the village.

Timothy Beattie, 56, of Kandahar Road, decided to turn one of his old bikes into a new bin for the area in Palmers Field after receiving a call from the Parish Council about the amount of rubbish which had been strewn across the track.

Mr Beattie said: “This is the fifth bin I have made for the village, after receiving a call about the rubbish I decided to go there with my van and clear it up. I jokingly said to Alison Edmonds, vice chairman of the Parish Council, that the area could do with a bin. That is how it all happened.”

Aldbourne has seen Mr Beattie install the imaginative bins in the village before, with others placed in the centre, outside the local Co-op supermarket and outside the Blue Boar pub in The Green.

“The other bins include Dr Who’s Tardis in the village centre, the second was a Dalek, the third which stands outside the Co-op is a mobile phone and the fourth is a recreation of the Blue Boar’s old sign,” added Mr Beattie.

The sign, which was replaced after the filming of the Jon Pertwee’s Dr Who episode, Daemons, was used as an inspiration to capture a fond memory of Aldbourne’s history.

“I had the original idea for the first bin after noticing the amount of rubbish which had been left in the centre of the village. I remember clearing it one day then returning to a mess the day after. All of it just followed on from there,” said Mr Beattie.

Peter Lawler, chairman of the Aldbourne Parish Council, said: “The Parish Council are very grateful to Tim for taking this initiative to make and position novelty bins, these have been very effective in reducing litter in other areas of the village.”
