THE National Trust team of volunteers at Avebury have received praise for their friendly and welcoming attitude towards visitors of the site.

After a number of surveys were carried out reports showed that people found the reception they received from the volunteers as warm and welcoming.

Abby George, marketing and communications officer at Avebury, said: “These fantastic people come from all walks of life- teachers, carers, accountants, actors, roles too numerous to mention. Each brings their own skills and unique perspective to their work and usually go on to learn something new too.”

It isn’t just the visitors who appreciate the National Trust site, with volunteers explaining why they have a soft spot for Avebury.

Lynne Bearman said: “I love the history of the people who lived in the Manor. Since the BBC programme The Manor Reborn five years ago, such life has been breathed into the house and that makes it so much fun to work here. I love explaining to people the detail in the small things that you would not think of and learning new facts about the collection.”

The range of roles for the volunteers covers all bases from front of house work to meeting and greeting the visitors at the henge, giving them the chance to meet different people everyday.

Kate Stevens, another volunteer at Avebury, said: “We all have a laugh, we meet interesting people from all over the world and I’ve learned so much since I’ve been here, and not all about history.”

The team at Avebury are on the lookout for any enthusiastic people who may be interested in joining their team. For more information go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury or call 01672 539250.
