COMMUTERS travelling through Marlborough faced a three-mile queue of traffic when a lorry became stuck.

The Hungarian articulated lorry was making its way into Herd Street from The Green junction on Tuesday when it became stuck between two houses, blocking the road for nearly four hours.

Steve Pascall, 79, of The Green, said: “A lot of lorries come up that hill usually first thing in the morning, this one was enormous and it was so heavily laid it just couldn’t move. I don’t see why the police didn’t just let him reverse back down in the first place.

"Thankfully the lorry didn’t do any damage to the building and no one was hurt.

"Unfortunately it is a very common thing in Marlborough, but on the funnier side of things, when the lorry was stuck the whole part of town was so peaceful.”

In May another HGV became stuck between two buildings while trying to travel down Silverless Street, later on in the year in November another lorry knocked a number of tiles off the roof of the listed building Dormy House.

Signs were put in place warning heavy vehicles not to travel down the road but to little effect.

Shelley Parker, Marlborough town clerk, said: “HGVs are a constant issue in the town but we are on a main route and deliveries do have to be made.

"The town council and members of the public have been lobbying Wiltshire Council about the A346 and Transition Marlborough have made statements about the level of pollution let off by these vehicles.”

Wiltshire Police received a report just after 4pm that the lorry was stuck and closed the road until it could be freed.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “The lorry was blocking the road completely.

"We called a recovery vehicle at 5.10pm and then about 20 minutes later Wiltshire Council told us to close the road completely.

"The recovery vehicle arrived at about 8pm and took the lorry to Swindon before we finally opened the road again.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “This appears to be an isolated incident, however we will add this to the monitoring we are currently carrying out regarding the changes to Silverless Street.”
