FAMILIES celebrated the Queen's 90th birthday in St John’s Close, Marlborough, with it being the only street in the town which applied for a street closure.

Union flags which last saw service during the Olympic year of 2012 were dusted off along with patriot bunting.

Friends and neighbours from Cross Lane were also invited and everyone brought food and drink to share with vintage tea cups and plates used.

The close has a reputation for holding street parties in the summer and Christmas drinks parties in December, as a chance to welcome new neighbours and promote community spirit.

This time the idea of applying to close the road to traffic for the afternoon came from Sue McCalla with Betty Dobson, Jo Payne and residents' association chairman Max More involved in the organisation.

Grown ups enjoyed Pimm's and prosecco with food ranging from pizza and frittata to sushi and sandwiches, with many varieties of cake.

Community spirit in the road is also fostered by allotments in the centre of the close, some privately owned, some rented out by the town council, which are almost exclusively gardened by residents of the road, who help each other out by mowing pathways and trimming hedges.
