IN A bid to clear their streets of rubbish a group of Avebury villagers and Parish Councillors donned high-vis jackets and litter pickers.

The group of 10 Avebury residents met up over the weekend with the aim to help rid their area of unwanted litter after noticing a number of patches of rubbish strewn around the village.

Lynzey Paradise, 34, of High Street, Avebury Parish Councillor, said: “The litter pick took place on Saturday morning. The National Trust has a big presence in the village and litter picks at the henge twice a week but we noticed that parts were getting more untidy and we don’t really have many bins around. Certain areas were becoming a bit of a state so we had ten people, four or five are Parish Councillors, walk about and fill up some bin bags.”

This was the first time the Parish Council have taken part in the scheme, hoping that it will become a regular event.

“Roughly we had about seven or eight bags full, we picked up books, towels, tee lights and a number of paper cups that we found at bus stops and verges, paper cups were the main things we noticed. This is the first one we have done and we would like to make it regular, when we were walking about we had people say they would want to take part. People really do care about where they live,” added Mrs Paradise.

The Parish Council was provided with hi-vis jackets and litter pickers by Wiltshire Council which offers people the equipment if an interest is shown in taking part in a litter pick scheme.

Mrs Paradise said: “Wiltshire Council were very helpful. If anyone would like to get involved with the next litter pick they can visit the Avebury Parish Council website and email the clerk at clerk@aveburyparishcouncil.org.”
