SCORES of people turned out to show their support and raise a whopping £1,905 at a charity football match in memory of former Marlborough student Charlie Lamb.

The popular teenager’s friends and former football teammates battled it out on the pitch for the second time since the 18-year-old from West Grafton, near Pewsey, died in a car crash in 2009.

And around 200 people attended the event at Pewsey Vale Football Club on Friday and braved the chilly temperatures to help raise cash for Charlie’s Charity, which provides funds to help local sports clubs.

Among the success stories to have benefited from Charlie’s Charity is one of his best friends, Jon Guthrie, 23, who is a professional footballer for Crewe Alexandra, Tom Alsop, who plays for Hampshire Cricket Club and talented young motorbike racer Max Cook.

All three were at the game and presented Charlie’s mum Jane with a bunch of flowers. Jon also played during the match and saw Charlie Lamb’s unbeaten 11 team claim another victory, winning 7-6. But it was Jon’s brother Rob Guthrie who scored the first goal of the game.

Neil Guthrie, who was MC for the evening and helped organise the match, said he was delighted with how it went and it showed how much Charlie, who was a talented sportsman, meant to people.

He said: “Once again the local community, and Pewsey in particular, showed what a close-knit area we live in and how they will rally round good causes.

“A massive thank you to everybody who attended and gave so generously with their money to the raffle.

“A huge thank you to Walter Rose of Devizes for the BBQ, to Fun Inflatables for the bouncy castle and to all the local businesses and friends who donated such fantastic raffle prizes

“Jane Lamb was amazed at the turn out and the money raised and so pleased to keep Charlie’s memory and legacy alive.

“We are already looking at how to improve things for next year and this may include a move to Saturday afternoon along with securing a local band to play after the match.”
