PUPILS at St Mary’s School and residents of Merlin Court Care Home in Marlborough came together to spend the afternoon making a blast from the past.

A group of pupils, from reception to year two, visited the care home on Tuesday (April 19) to meet the residents and work together to fill a time capsule with personal belongings and pictures of things that they hold dear.

Gill Macdonald, Year Two teacher at St Mary’s, said: “The care home asked for a group of children to come down and take part in this activity. It was a joyful occasion and a good opportunity for different generations to share an activity.  “Our children drew pictures of precious things such as their family, or a memory of a holiday they have been on. They all really enjoyed it, and the care home was fantastic. The children were given cupcakes and juice and even little goody bags to go home with.”

Residents of the care home wrote down stories of their lives and included photographs to go along with the pictures by the children.

Hilary Harding, the newly appointed manager at Marlin Court, said: “It was a great opportunity to capture memories from the old and young, and our residents have many fascinating stories and memories to share. With the children’s memories in the same capsule too it will be a fantastic archive when it is next discovered.”

As well as the two generations sharing their experiences and burying the capsule, Marlborough Mayor Margaret Rose also visited the care home to be given a tour, with the completion of the building due this summer after a million pound refurbishment.

Coun Rose said: “It was a fantastic day and I was delighted to have been invited for the time capsule burial. Taking a tour of the home afterwards, I was very impressed by the work; this will be a fantastic home for Marlborough.”
