AN elderly couple had hundreds of pounds stolen from their bank account after thieves watched them type their PIN number in Waitrose, followed them home and then burgled them.

Wiltshire Police are advising members of the public to be vigilant following the incident in Marlborough on Friday (Nov 13) at 9.45am.

The elderly couple were shopping in the supermarket in the High Street and it is believed a man and a woman, watched as they entered their PIN at the checkout.

They were then followed home where they were asked for directions. While the couple were distracted, the woman entered the house and stole a bank card which was then used to withdraw £750.

Two people have been identified and arrested on suspicion of theft, and other offences around the country.

Sergeant Clare Wallace said: "While not common, this is not the first incident of this type in Wiltshire.

"There have been a number of reports of people elsewhere in the county, either being followed or distracted in the street and having their belongings, usually a bank card, stolen.

“I would urge everyone to be vigilant when using their bank cards and entering their PIN. Keep your belongings safe and in sight, especially if you're approached by someone you don't know. Anything suspicious should be reported to the police straight away."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Wiltshire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
