THERE were delays in Marlborough last night when a car rolled into the middle of the High Street blocking buses, lorries and cars for nearly an hour – with the driver nowhere to be seen.

The Vauxhall Astra was parked outside the My Local shop, which was formerly Morrisons, and it is understood despite the handbrake being applied it gave way coming to a halt in the middle of the road just after 6pm.

Drivers had to carefully manoeuvre themselves around the car, avoiding hitting any of the vehicles parked outside the shop, while some members of the public directed traffic.

Lorries and the number 48 Thamesdown bus heading to Swindon could not get past and passengers got out to find another way home because of the 45 minute delay.

Bus driver Roy Rendell said: “I was driving along and it was stopped there and I thought it must have broken down. So I thought I would get out and help them push it, but there was no driver and the handbrakes on and it is all locked up.”

A police officer arrived just after 6.30pm and radioed for recovery so the car could be towed relieving the traffic behind.

However, just before 7pm a couple returned having been for a curry at The Raj where they were puzzled to find their car in the road and quickly moved it out of the way.
