VILLAGERS came bearing fruits in glorious sunshine for the community apple pressing day in Avebury on Saturday.

Laden with apples, people gathered at the village orchard to try their hand at using the community apple press to turn their apples into fresh juice, before peeling themselves away to have a go at other apple related activities.

The annual event has been organised by the Avebury Community Orchard group for the past four years to bring the village together and has grown in popularity ever since.

Youngsters enjoyed creating their own animals out of apples and had their faces painted, while bakers showed off the fruits of their labour in the apple cake competition which was won by Kate Hammersley.

There was also the chance to try some apple bobbing and chairman of the community shop Michele Lomas, 52, even donned a Second World War Women's Land Army outfit as she operated the apple presser.

Mrs Lomas, of Avebury Trusloe, said: "We invited the local community to bring any apples they had to press because have got a community apple press and crusher, so we taught people how to use it.

"It was a jolly atmosphere and the weather was lovely. Throughout the morning and afternoon lots of people were bringing bags and boxes of apples.

"With the waste we gave it to someone to feed their pigs, so hopefully there were some very happy pigs.

"It started off about four years ago, as we had an apple tree behind the community shop and borrowed an apple press and it went from there. We have now planted a community orchard and raised funds to buy our own apple pressing equipment."

All the proceeds raised are used to plant more trees in the community orchard near the sports field.
