CREEPY crawlies from spiders to snakes and a whole host of activities kept more than 400 happy revellers from babies to pensioners entertained in Aldbourne.

Organised by the successful Aldbourne Youth Council, people from Marlborough, Hungerford and Swindon travelled to the village on Wednesday to enjoy the hours of fun, which was entirely free and held at Farm Lane Field, owned by the parish council.

There was a climbing wall, rodeo bull, bouncy castle and other quirky activities such as Zorbing, a disco dome and indoor laser challenge which involved intrepid youngsters finding their way through tunnels.

Razamatazz Magic also gripped the audience with their tricks, while Imogen Hale, 17, kept visitors fed with her BBQ, which she was doing to raise money for her three month volunteering trip to Kenya in September and she managed to raise £370 from the sales.

But the fun wasn’t just for youngsters as many older members of the public joined in and families gathered to have picnics in the sunshine.

The youth council – which is jointly chaired by Jack Maslin, 15, and Alex Flinders, 15, with Jo Gould, 15, as vice-chairman – have spent the past few months deciding what they wanted to do for the sixth annual national play day with the help of the 18 members, eight trustees and more than 30 volunteers.

Trustee Hazel Keen said: “It was the perfect day. The field was packed with people, from all ages – babies to people in their late 90s.

“The atmosphere was brilliant, everybody had a wonderful time. We got some really nice feedback commenting how brilliant it was and it was the best one yet, it was massive, there was so much to do.

“I would say there were about 400 people, but that’s a conservative estimate because the field was packed all day, it was just buzzing.”

The village youth council, which was formed ten years ago, is also going from strength to strength and their charity shop at the Community Junction centre celebrates its two year anniversary in September.

All this summer they will be hosting a range of summer activities for young people in and around the Marlborough area.

The activities, which include sports, cook and crafts and trips to fun venues, are supported by the Local Youth Network which co-ordinates youth activities in the area as part of Wiltshire Council’s model for youth activities.

The activities are funding by Marlborough Area Board, Aster Housing, Aldbourne Parish Council and Aldbourne Youth Council. Sign up and permission forms are available at aldbourneyouthcouncil.co.uk or by emailing community youth officer Jan Bowra on janette.bowra@wiltshire.gov.uk

Mrs Keen added: “The youth council is doing really well. They are a fantastic team and it’s going in the direction the youngsters want it to.”
